Dr. Øystein H. Rolandsen is a Senior Researcher at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). Previously he has been a Junior Research Fellow at Durham University, and a visiting academic at Oxford University and Northwestern University. Geographically his research interests span the whole of the African continent, but Rolandsen's area of specialisation is East African and the Horn of Africa. He travels frequently to this region to interview people from all walks of life and to search for archival material and other kind of documents. In his research Rolandsen covers a broad range of topics such as civil wars, state violence, de-colonialisation, state building, peace building, peace negotiations, peace keeping, humanitarian aid, local violence and border issues. Since he often combine tools and perspectives from History, Political Science and Anthropology he might best be described as an "Area studies specialist". Not only has Rolandsen written and contributed to multiple books, he has published articles in a number of academic outlets, for example: Journal of African History, Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding, Journal of Eastern African Studies, International Journal of African Historical Studies, International Area Studies Review and Review of African Political Economy.
