Alex leads the Coastal Connections Project at the World Monuments Fund and English Heritage. He is also Honorary Reader in Cartography and Geographic Information Science at Canterbury Christ Church University (UK), Editor-in-Chief of The Cartographic Journal (Taylor & Francis), and Senior Research Associate at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, University of Oxford. A former President of the British Cartographic Society, his award-winning research in cartography has taken him all over the world and he regularly gives keynotes and lectures (from aesthetics to Soviet mapping) to a wide range of audiences. Alex first discovered Soviet maps while trekking across the mountains in Kazakhstan and later joined forces with John Davies to write the bestselling book 'The Red Atlas', a detailed and beautifully illustrated introduction to the most comprehensive cartographic project of the twentieth century.
