Alicia Maher was born and raised in Santa Ana, El Salvador. She moved to the United States at the age of nineteen. She wrote and self-published Delicious El Salvador, the first Salvadoran cookbook in English in the world, and a winner of the Gourmand Award for best first cookbook. Alicia's recipe for Ayote en Miel was featured in The New York Times. In 2021, the Salvadoran ambassador to the United States, Milena Mayorga, presented Alicia with special rcognition for her work showcasing El Salvador's authentic food and recipes. Alicia learned to cook from her mother, grandmother, aunts and friends. She teaches Salvadoran cooking classes at her home, and it past at Whole Foods, Surfas Culinary Distric, Los Angeles Public Libraries, UCLA, and Latin Food Fest. Alicia was a contributor to The Immigrant Cookbook: Recipes That Make America Great, from Interlink Publishing. She represented the millions of Salvadoran immigrants living in the US. Alicia has lectured on Salvadoran food history and traditions at the Umea Food Symposium in Sweden, for the Culinary Historians of Southern California, the Culinary Historians of San Diego, Salvies Who Lunch, and for UCLA's 100 year anniversary celebration, her alma mater. She has always celebrated and recognized the rich legacy of Salvadoran family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.
