Bac Hoai Tran

A language lecturer at UC Berkeley since 1992, Bac Hoai Tran holds an M.A. in English with a concentration in linguistics. He is the author of the textbooks Conversational Vietnamese (1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2013) and Anh Ngu Bao Chi (Newspaper English) (1993), and is a coauthor of Living with English (2001). He is a co-translator of the collection of short stories titled The Stars, The Earth, The River (1997), as well as several other short stories in the anthologies The Other Side of Heaven (1995), Vietnam: A Traveler's Literary Companion (1996), Night, Again (1996), Virtual Lotus: Modern Fiction of Southeast Asia (2002), and Crossing the River (2003). He is also a coauthor of the Vietnamese Dictionary & Phrasebook (2004), the Vietnamese Practical Dictionary (2010), and Colloquial Vietnamese (2012). A UC Berkeley representative at the Group of Universities for the Advancement of Vietnamese Abroad (GUAVA) since its inception, Bac Tran was its Co-President for the 2003-06 term. He has been the Vietnamese Coordinator at the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since SEASSI 2000. A coauthor of the Vietnamese Language Learning Framework, which was published in the Journal of Southeast Asian Language Teaching (JSEALT & E-JSEALT) of the Council of Teachers of Southeast Asian Languages (COTSEAL), Bac Tran became COTSEAL President in 2005 and was re-elected for another three-year term in 2008. He was also the Vietnamese Advanced Summer Institute Curriculum Director when VASI was housed at the Center for Southeast Asia Studies at UC Berkeley from 2008 to 2011. Currently, he is translating a novella and co-translating a memoir.
