Brian Todd Carey teaches at the American Public University System where he holds the rank of Assistant Professor of History and Military History. He is the author of dozens of articles in numerous magazines and journals, including Aviation History, Command Magazine, History Magazine, Marine Corps Gazette, Medieval History Magazine, Military Heritage, Military History, Strategy and Tactics, World History Bulletin, World at War, World War II, and WWII Quarterly: The Journal of the Second World War. He also contributed seventeen peer-reviewed articles on ancient, classical and medieval Eurasian warfare to the twenty-one volume ABC-CLIO-World History Encyclopedia (2011). Collaborating with map illustrators Joshua Allfree and John Cairns he published a two-volume military history survey in 2006 entitled Warfare in the Ancient World and Warfare in the Medieval World covering the evolution of warfare in western civilization from the rise of Sumer through the Thirty Years' War. In 2008 he published a book describing the campaigns of Hannibal Barca and the Second Punic War entitled Hannibal's Last Battle: Zama and the Fall of Carthage. Their fourth book, entitled Road to Manzikert: Byzantine and Islamic Warfare, 527-1071 (Pen and Sword Books, 2012) explores the martial relationships between Byzantium and Islam culminating in the famous battle of Manzikert. In 2022, he will publish the first volume of a two volume series on the crusades. Warfare in the Age of Crusades: The Latin East will concentrate on the numbered crusades to the Levant and North Africa, while Warfare in the Age of Crusades: Europe, describes Catholic missionary warfare across the continent against Islamic forces in Iberia during the Reconquista, crusades against perceived heretics (Albigensian and Hussite crusades), and the Northern or Baltic Crusades against pagan and Orthodox enemies.
