Bruce Hanington is a Professor in the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has held former roles as Head of School, Director of Graduate Studies, Director of Executive Education, and Program Chair of Industrial Design. His core teaching includes Research Methods for Design and Design Principles and Practices. Bruce has dedicated his work to methods and practices for human centered design. He has book chapters in The Routledge Handbook of Sustainable Design, and Emotions and Affect in Human Factors and Human-Computer Interaction. Bruce is co-author of the book Universal Methods of Design: 125 Ways to Research Complex Problems, Develop Innovative Ideas, and Design Effective Solutions (Rockport 2019; Pocket Edition 2022). He holds a BA in Applied Psychology and a Master of Environmental Design (MEDes) in Industrial Design from the University of Calgary, Canada.
