Carolyn B. Allard, PhD, ABPP, is a licensed, board certified clinical psychologist, researcher and educator with more than 15 years of experience providing science-backed therapy for people experiencing posttraumatic stress and other trauma-related conditions. She is a Distinguished Professor and the Program Director of the PhD Program at the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) at Alliant International University and is the co-developer of Trauma Informed Guilt Reduction (TrIGR), a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that has been scientifically shown to help patients reduce the guilt and shame that often result from trauma. Dr. Allard’s particular interest in trauma-related guilt and shame was roused during her earliest clinical and research experiences working with patients whose feelings of guilt and shame were perpetuating suffering and hindering their recovery from trauma. For more than a decade, Dr. Allard served as Program Director of the Military Sexual Trauma & Interpersonal Trauma Clinic and the San Diego Advanced Fellowship in Women's Health for at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System and University of California San Diego Department of Psychiatry. She served as principal or co-investigator on several past and ongoing university, Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense funded studies, including multi-site clinical trials. Her research is focused on the identification of individual, sociocultural, and contextual interventions to improve outcomes for trauma survivors. Dr. Allard is also an award-winning trainer, social advocate and sought-after speaker on the subject of trauma-related guilt and shame. She is past president of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Trauma Division (Division 56), working to bridge culturally informed trauma research, practice and advocacy to effect positive change in local and global communities. She is the author Trauma Informed Guilt Reduction (TrIGR) Therapy for mental health professionals and the new self-help book Transform Your Guilt and Shame that includes scientifically proven strategies from TrIGR therapy to help people reduce guilt and shame associated with trauma and adversity.
