Carolyn Quick Tillery, “The HBCU Cookbook Writer,” is passionate about food and history. As a child, Carolyn was deeply influenced by the rich culinary traditions of her family and their amazing oral stories. When she needed to create a pick-up-and-go career, she married her two passions. She wrote “The African American Heritage Cookbook: Traditional Recipes and Fond Remembrances from Alabama’s Renowned Tuskegee Institute.” Acclaimed for its lively storytelling, vintage photographs, and traditional southern recipes, it tells the story of Tuskegee’s founding, history, and legendary graduates. Her HBCU cookbook series soon followed which includes "A Taste of Freedom" (Hampton University), "Celebrating Our Equality" (Howard University), and "Southern Homecoming Traditions" (AUC). "Southern Homecoming Traditions,”a NAACP Image Award finalist, highlights the traditions of Morehouse, Spelman, Morris Brown colleges, Morehouse School of Medicine, Interdenominational Theological Center, and Clark-Atlanta University. Author Carolyn Quick Tillery, a Tuskegee Institute (now University) alumna and former prosecuting attorney, uses the evocative powers of food and storytelling to return us to these HBCUs where so many great African-American leaders were educated and the region where so many great dishes were created.
