Writing has been a passion for me since my teens. I have published eighty essays on political and environmental topics in major newspapers, as well as non-fiction stories in anthologies and articles in professional journals. Becoming American is my first full-length book. It grew out of a trip I took with my daughter in search of our family roots in Eastern Europe, and particularly a hidden cemetery in which my paternal great-grandparents were buried. That adventure got me thinking about my experiences growing up in post-war Europe as the child of Holocaust survivors, my family's immigration to the Unites States, military service, a career as a lawyer and college professor, and involvement in many of the most significant political developments of our time. I also have been motivated to tell my story by the current controversies over immigration and what it means to be an American. By sharing my experiences, I hope to show readers how immigrants become real Americans, fully engaged with our culture. I recently completed my second book, On Two Legs and Three Wheels, a sometimes humorous, sometimes serious collection of stories about traveling all over the world with a partner who is disabled and relies on a three-wheeled mobility scooter. In addition to relating interesting travel experiences, the book is intended to inspire older or disabled readers to keep traveling after reading of the wide range of places we have gone, from the Arctic Ocean to Caribbean islands, from mountains and deserts to urban centers. In the meantime, I continue writing essays and short non-fiction pieces.
