In 2009, I embarked on my college journey, which also marked the beginning of my relationship with Kayla, who would later become my wife. It feels like I've always known her; she spent much of her time at her grandmother's home, situated directly across from my father's. Throughout my college days, I earned extra money by detailing cars and spent my leisure time at the beach. Kayla, ever supportive, would often join me after her work to help out, just so we could spend time together. She's truly remarkable. After completing my undergraduate studies and earning a paralegal certificate, I contemplated law school but decided against it due to financial reasons. Before my degree from Coastal Carolina University arrived in the mail, I took my first flight to boot camp, marking the beginning of a six-month separation from Kayla due to various trainings. Upon my return, we moved to California for a year before receiving orders to Washington. If you've never driven the Cascade Loop in Washington, I highly recommend it. It's a breathtaking route from Seattle's coastline to mountain lakes, desert sand dunes, and back remains one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. I'll share a photo from the loop on the author's page. While in Washington, we welcomed our first daughter into the world amidst my six deployments. These periods away were tough on Kayla and our daughter, especially with our families being on the East Coast. Noticing their growing sadness with each departure, I resolved to make a change and applied to law schools. Despite a final deployment nearly complicating our plans, I was able to return in time for the transition out of service, even receiving an early promotion. Our move across the country for law school was met with a tragic family death, and delayed furniture delivery, leading to a month on an air mattress. Life eventually normalized, but my second year in law school was disrupted by the pandemic. During this time, we made our way through law school, virtual kindergarten, and a complicated pregnancy. Despite the hurdles, we welcomed a healthy baby and gained an incredible story. The pandemic period rekindled our creative spark, leading us to writing books together—a pursuit now central to our family life. Our daughters participates too, crafting book ideas from construction paper. This new passion has us excited about future publications, aiming to create lighthearted, educational stories for children. Through our Lucy series, we share life lessons on friendship, sharing, trust, and emotions, drawing from our real-life experiences.
