Chris Baker

Pasuk Phongpaichit and Chris Baker have been a partnership for almost 40 years ago, and a writing partnership for over 20. They were awarded the Fukuoka Asia Grand Prize for 2017. They have jointly produced five books, around thirty articles, three edited books, and six translations, all on Thailand-related subjects, ranging across history, political economy and literature, several in Thai and English, and some translated to Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. A History of Thailand (CUP), now in its third edition, has been in print for ten years; its Thai translation went into three editions within 6 months. Their translation of The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen, a folk epic poem of a thousand pages won the AAS translation prize (and is now the subject of a PhD thesis). They have been visiting professors at universities in USA, Japan, and Australia. For fifteen years, they authored a column in the Bangkok press, and have been invited to contribute op-eds to several international newspapers. Their A History of Ayutthaya appears on the 250th anniversary of the fall of this great Asian capital.
