Christopher A. Snyder became the founding dean of the Shackouls Honors College at Mississippi State University in 2011. He is Professor of European History at MSU and is also an affiliated faculty member in the Department of English. His MA and PhD in History are from Emory University, and in addition to Emory he has taught at the College of William and Mary and at Marymount University, where he served for nine years as Chair of the Department of History and Politics and five years as Director of the Honors Program. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a Distinguished Alumnus of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University, where he majored in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Dr. Snyder has authored ten books and numerous articles in the fields of archaeology, history, literary criticism, and medieval studies. His latest book is Hobbit Virtues: Rediscovering Virtue Ethics through J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' (Pegasus, 2020). Dr. Snyder was a Research Fellow affiliated with the History Faculty at the University of Oxford from 2014-19. He has lectured frequently at the Smithsonian Institution and has appeared on the History Channel, The Learning Channel, the National Geographic Channel, and BBC television and radio.
