Dale Ellis describes himself professionally as an analyst. Throughout his career, Dale has always taken an analytical approach to his work. Graduating with a major in science education and a minor in history, Dale analyzed both his students and subject matter to become a Christian high school teacher and coach. He used the same techniques eight years later to make a successful transition into Computer Information Systems. During the next 25 years, Dale advanced from programmer to consultant, working on such varied projects as reorganizing an auto assembly plant in Ohio, rolling out smart phones in Brazil and helping a major telecommunications company sell cable, internet and phone services online. His most valuable skill was the ability to bridge the communication gaps between groups. Technical and nontechnical. Professional and amateur. Buyer and seller. Dale’s desire to write was initially triggered in 2005 by a magazine article denouncing the iconic David and Goliath battle as a myth. The author’s premise was that the Philistine giant could never have possessed the armor described in the Bible. However, Dale knew the Philistines were one of the Sea Peoples, a diverse group roaming the Mediterranean in the late Bronze Age. Numerous scholars believe that Goliath’s ancestors originated in ancient Greece, where armor similar to the Biblical account existed. Score one for the Old Testament. Yet few readers would ever look past the original magazine article. This prompted Dale to consider the value of historical fiction. Scripture verses and pottery shards only tell so much about a Philistine giant and a Hebrew shepherd. Real people have understandable motivations and logical behaviors. Dale saw historical fiction as a tool to help fill the void for inquiring minds. Like modern computer simulations, Dale felt historical fiction could lead to discoveries and insights overlooked by traditional history. Therefore, Dale determined to write a novel that is true to Old Testament scripture, historically accurate and tells an exciting story.
