David A. Charters is Professor of Military History and Senior Fellow of the Gregg Centre for Study of War and Society at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He teaches about, researches, and publishes on terrorism and countering terrorism, intelligence activities, counter-insurgency, and special operations. Born and raised in Montreal he received his PhD in War Studies from King's College, University of London in 1980, and was co-founder of the Centre for Conflict Studies, the predecessor of the Gregg Centre. From 2005 to 2008 he served on Canada's Advisory Council on National Security. He is author or editor of some 100 publications in his fields of expertise. His most recent articles examined British Army/MI5 agent-running in Northern Ireland, and Canadian intelligence operations in Afghanistan. Beneath The Rose (2014) is his first novel. Outside of his academic and professional life he pursues an active recreational lifestyle that has included: car racing, sailing, cross-country skiing, ballroom dancing, and playing guitar in a rock band.
