Having studied the influence of behaviour on food choice for forty years I realized that there was one thing that I had ignored: obesity. When I subsequently looked at the topic I found that both politicians and the food industry had been dramatically unhelpful. Why were so many people being allowed to suffer? The resulting outrage led to the writing of this book. If politicians and the food industry were so unhelpful there was another group who might be able to engineer change: the general public. The book therefore aims to put obesity and past failures in the public eye and political arena, hopefully forcing politians to act meaninglully, while indicating how the individual can control their weight. It is scandalous that the life expectancy of the majority of the population has been reduced, following years of ill-health. Something needs to change.
