I am a veterinary surgeon, and spent the first ten years after qualifying from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1974 working as a farm animal vet mainly in Devon and Dorset. In 1983 - I joined the government veterinary investigation service, working as a veterinary investigation officer and gross pathologist for the next 30 years. During this time I investigated many different outbreaks and incidents of health, disease and welfare issues mainly in farm animals, but also in a range of other species including zoo animals. I was heavily involved in the investigation and control of BSE , and in a variety of roles during the outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in 2001 and 2007. I am currently an honorary vet to the British Goat Society and Chairman of the Goat Vet Society, and a past president of the British Cattle Veterinary Association. I am a visiting Reader in veterinary pathology at the university of Surrey's new veterinary school, and a visiting lecturer at Bristol, Liverpool and London schools of veterinary science.
