David Spanagel is Associate Professor of History in the Department of Humanities and Arts at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Mass. His college teaching career began in 1984 at St. John Fisher College, where Spanagel was an instructor of mathematics and computer science for four years. After obtaining a Ph.D. in the history of science from Harvard University in 1996, he taught at MIT's Program in Science Technology and Society for half a year, at Emerson College's Honors Program and General Science Program for five years, then back to Harvard as a Lecturer in the History of Science/Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies in History and Science for three years. In 2005, he came to WPI, where he finally landed a tenure-track appointment four years later. A former Chair of the Steering Committee for the Forum on the History of Science in America, Dr. Spanagel now serves as the Treasurer of the History of Earth Sciences Society (HESS).
