Born in Bishop Auckland, County Durham in 1945, David Gregory was brought up in Newfoundland and Pakistan before completing his education in England. He served as a seaman officer in the Royal Navy during the 1960s before spending six years in the Sea Wing of the nascent Abu Dhabi Defence Force during the period when the old states of Trucial Oman merged into what is now the UAE. Subsequently, he worked worldwide in the offshore oil industry as Master of salvage tugs and support ships. In 1980, he became a full time professional yacht captain and delivery skipper. After retiring in 2004, he has concentrated on writing on naval affairs and also producing a specific account of Anglo-German naval relations and conflict. For many years he has commented on naval matters and contributed articles to specialist publications such as Navy International and Warships World. The second volume of ‘The Lion and The Eagle’ trilogy was published in 2014. A third volume will follow in 2016.
