Born in Scotland, Derek Blyth has worked for several decades in Amsterdam and Brussels as a journalist, writer and tour guide. Based in Belgium since 1990, he is considered a local expert on this relatively unknown country - which he has described as “the strangest country in the world”. His aim as a travel writer is to discover hidden places and secret stories, from the scarred landscapes of the First World War to the tiny craft breweries of the Ardennes. He is the author of The 500 Hidden Secrets of Brussels, along with similar guides to Ghent, Antwerp and Bruges. He is also the author of Hidden Belgium and is currently working on a walking guide to Brussels.
