Twenty-three years after first putting pen to paper, Richard ‘Dick’ Emery finally finished the memoir of his time as the Man in the Middle of one of Britain’s most contentious industrial disputes, the 1984 miner’s strike. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the nine months of mob rule, violence, and intimidation among the mining community, when families and towns were irreparably divided by their differing views on the strike, and thousands lost their jobs. Dick saw the final manuscript but sadly didn’t live to see his life’s work in print. The book has been finished by his beloved wife Margaret in his honour and his memory, to celebrate the courage of an amazing man, the Man in the Middle who really made a difference. Dick defended the livelihoods of others against politician and unionist alike, offering a unique perspective on Britain’s most contentious industrial dispute.
