Dino was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He pursued his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Toronto, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Zoology in 1991 and his Masters of Science in Biomedical Communications (BMC) five years later. After graduating from the BMC program, he worked for a biomedical art house for seven years as a scientific illustrator and animator producing visuals, predominately for undergraduate textbook publications. He currently works for a medical legal studio in Toronto as an associate art director and medical illustrator producing visuals for personal injury lawyers. In 1991, Dino enrolled in a comparative vertebrate anatomy course at the U of T where he met Gerardo (Gerry) De Iuliis, a PhD student and teaching assistant at that time. They developed a friendship over the next few years and worked together producing scientific illustrations of giant ground sloth fossils for Gerry’s research. In 1998, while working on some illustrations, Gerry causally mentioned his frustration with the existing dissection manuals and suggested that they should create their own – the result was The Dissection of Vertebrates. The first edition of this book took over six years to complete while simultaneously trying to juggle their full time jobs and families. With the publication of the second edition behind them, Gerry and Dino are already planning content for future editions. The Association of Medical Illustrators has awarded Dino’s work from the first edition of The Dissection of Vertebrates with an Award of Excellence in 2005 and the Medical Book Award in 2007. A new illustration created for the second edition of The Dissection of Vertebrates earned a Jury Award from The Focus on Nature National History Illustration Exhibition in 2010. When time permits, Dino’s current freelance projects include creating paleontological illustrations of meat eating dinosaurs (tyrannosaurids) from North America and Asia for journal publication.
