DR. RAIMONDS SIMANIS (1966) is an infectious diseases specialist, an associate professor with over 30 years of experience in infectious diseases with a PhD. He has worked in academia, research and clinical medicine. Raimonds can also speak from experience as a patient in an infectious diseases’ hospital. He is a world traveler, nature lover, birdwatcher and photographer. A desire to see the world, and the experience of living through the Nepal Earthquake, led Raimonds to consider the fragility and vulnerability of humans. Raimonds wants to open the gates of understanding to the secret world of microbes as our knowledge in this area of science has grown immensely, thanks to sophisticated instruments and microbiological laboratories. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he has been in close contact with the suffering and death of loved ones. This time has been an intensely emotional life experience. Writing the book "Life Through The Eyes Of A Microbe" has been a wonderful opportunity to do good by sharing his knowledge and wisdom in this often-misunderstood area of science and to provide reliable information to people all around the world. Author’s picture: The bird in the author’s hand is Tengmalm’s Owl (Aegolius funereus). The owl has been caught by professional ornithologists for ringing purposes during Autumn migration in Pape Ornithological Station, Latvia. After the ringing procedure, the bird was released to continue it’s journey. This beautiful owl is mainly sedentary, but in some autumns migrate south.
