He was raised in a family of ranchers, learning the ways of the land from his father. He spent his childhood riding horses, mending fences, and tending to the herd of cattle that roamed their ranch. After studying literature at Texas A&M University, he spent several years working as a cowboy on various ranches across the state, honing his skills in horsemanship and living the life of a modern-day cowboy. This is when he reunited with his high school sweetheart, Tracie, and they decided to move to a ranch in Montana, where they raised their three kids. After their kids moved out, he picked up the pen once again. His writing is influenced by his firsthand knowledge of cowboy culture, as well as his extensive research into Western history and folklore.
