Dr. Elizabeth Barkley is a best-selling author whose books have been translated into multiple languages. They include Engaged Teaching: A Handbook for College Teachers (with Claire H. Major, 2022), as well as four in the Jossey-Bass/Wiley College Teaching Techniques Series: Student Engagement Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty (2nd ed., with Claire H. Major, 2020), Interactive Lecturing: A Handbook for College Faculty (with Claire H. Major, 2018), Learning Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty (with Claire H. Major, 2016), and Collaborative Learning Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty (2nd ed., with Claire H. Major and K. Patricia Cross, 2014). She also wrote Crossroads: The Roots of America’s Popular Music (2nd ed., Prentice Hall, 2007) and five interactive digital textbooks for Kendall Hunt in conjunction with Great River Learning: Crossroads: The Music of American Cultures (2019), World Music: Roots to Contemporary Global Fusions (2012), and the three-volume series Great Composers and Music Masterpieces of Western Civilization (with Robert Hartwell, 2015). Based on her books, she has been invited to present keynotes and conduct workshops at conferences and post-secondary institutions in the United States and internationally. With more than four decades’ experience as an innovative and reflective teacher, Elizabeth has received numerous honors and awards, most recently the League for Innovation’s Terry O’Banion Lifetime Achievement Prize for Inspiring Significant Change to Teaching and Learning. She was also named California’s Higher Education Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, formally recognized by the California state legislature for her contributions to undergraduate education, chosen as one of two Carnegie Scholars in the discipline of music to conduct pioneering work in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, selected as “Innovator of the Year” in conjunction with the National League for Innovation, presented with the Hayward Award for Educational Excellence, and honored by the Center for Diversity in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Additionally, her Music of American Cultures course – a comparative and integrative study of U.S. multicultural musical styles exploring the music of Native Americans, European Americans, African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, and Asian Americans from their historical roots to the present – was selected as “Best Online Course” by the California Virtual Campus. She is currently chief executive officer of the K. Patricia Cross Academy, a web-based professional development site for college faculty (https://kpcrossacademy.org), and professor emerita of music history at Foothill College, Los Altos, California.
