Fernando Luiz Lara is a Professor of Architecture at the Weitzman School of Design, University of Pennsylvania. Prof. Lara's interests revolve around Latin American 20th century architecture with emphasis on the dissemination of its values beyond the traditional disciplinary boundaries. Among his main publications are Street Matters: A Critical History of Twentieth-Century Urban Policy in Brazil (2022, with Ana Paula Koury); Excepcionalidad del Modernismo Brasileño (2019); Modern Architecture in Latin America (2015, with Luis Carranza) and The Rise of Popular Modernist Architecture in Brazil, (2008). In his over one hundred articles published in 6 languages over 15 countries, Prof. Lara has discussed the modern and the contemporary Brazilian architecture, its meaning, context and social-economic insertion. While some of his publications look at the modernist vocabulary and spatiality being appropriated by the humblest favela dwellers, the latest focus on developing a theory of space for the Americas.
