Mr. Johnson’s first book drew national attention when producers of History Channel’s Great Escapes with Morgan Freeman discovered it through his former employer, Freebird Publishers. Episode 8, “Assassin’s Flight,” focuses on the Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary from which James Earl Ray escaped in 1977. A Prison Anthology is a history of the infamous prison’s newspaper, Mountain Review, which opens with an article detailing Ray’s dash for freedom and many of the prison’s other notorious attributes. Garry W. Johnson was interviewed at length for the television program, sharing his inside knowledge of the facility and research on Ray’s escape. You can catch much of that interview on the History Channel and on their website. Garry’s second book, Finding the Fundamentals, focuses on the lost attributes of living a successful and liberated life. With the sheer volume of material produced each year attempting to reveal the “secrets” of success and happiness, Johnson maintains that the answers are not that complicated. He walks his reader step-by-step through the proven Fundamentals that always have – and always will – produce absolute freedom. Anything that is holding you down can be overcome. The Fundamentals are the key. Johnson's third book for the non-profit Covenant Concepts, a follow-up to Anthology – Brushy Mountain to Morgan County. It covers the final year of the infamous prison. Johnson worked 12 years in correctional education, 9 as a publications editor and 3 as a high school-level tutor. Along with his editing duties, Garry W. Johnson is a home renovator and building consultant in East Tennessee. You can find him on Facebook or at his home on the beautiful Clinch River.
