George F. DeMartino is a professor of international economics at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies of the University of Denver. He has served on faculty of the School since 1993; and served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies from 2002 to 2008. He earned his BA at Harvard University; an MA in Industrial Relations at Warwick University; and his PhD in Economics at the University of Massachusetts. Prior to graduate school, Professor DeMartino served as a union organizer and negotiator for AFSCME, AFL-CIO in Connecticut. Professor DeMartino’s research engages questions in ethics and economics, including the ethical foundations of economic theory and policy, and professional economic ethics. He has also written widely and teaches in the areas of global political economy, industrial relations, and political economy theory. His publications include Global Economy, Global Justice: Theoretical Objections and Policy Alternatives to Neoliberalism (Routledge, 2000). He has advocated for the creation of the new field of professional economic ethics in several articles, and in The Economist’s Oath: On the Need for and Content of Professional Economic Ethics (Oxford University Press, 2011). He co-edited with Deirdre McCloskey the Oxford Handbook of Professional Economic Ethics (2016). His newest book is The Tragic Science: How Economists Cause Harm (Even as They Aspire to Do Good (University of Chicago Press, 2022).
