Born in Northern Ireland, I have spent 45 years working in and with museums. I began my career as a field archaeologist then became a museum curator. In 1989 I branched out as a consultant in heritage interpretation and have continued in that role ever since. In 1994 I also began working part time at Nottingham Trent Museum - I love the combination of the two roles and firmly believe each has improved the other. I was appointed Professor of Museum Development at Nottingham Trent in 2014. Two museums where I have worked as interpretation consultant have won the prestigious UK Art Fund Prize. My first book, The Engaging Museum was written when a major consultancy project was delayed and has gone on the sell c8000 copies to date and be cited over 900 times. The second book, Transforming Museums etc. has also been a best seller. Now with the third, Museums and the Challenge of Change, I have completed a trilogy I never expected and produced what I believe is a major text about the future of museums - made all the more relevant by the inclusion of 15 chapters by 24 fellow contributors.
