I live to explore - new places, people and ideas - and I love to tell stories. My journalism work has appeared in newspapers and magazines from San Francisco to Johannesburg. I'm a science freak and history buff and those often influence my work. Before splitting my time between the US and UK, I spent nearly two years reporting on wildfire in the American West. During that time, I became a certified wildland firefighter; one of the hardest things I've ever done! That book is Wildfire: On the Front Lines With Station 8. I am also the author of the award-winning book Prophets and Moguls, Rangers and Rogues, Bison and Bears: 100 Years of the National Park Service, and co-author of Disappearing Destinations: 37 Places in Peril and What Can Be Done to Help Save Them. I've been interviewed for podcasts, magazines and newspapers, and often speak on topics at the intersection of people, places and science.
