Helen Mathers is an experienced author of history books and biographies. Her latest book 'Josephine Butler. Patron Saint of Prostitutes' is the paperback edition of her biography of the Victorian feminist campaigner. Josephine Butler's achievements were extraordinary. She campaigned on behalf of 'fallen women' and prostitutes and succeeded in repealing a law which allowed the police to sexually assault them. She was one of the leaders of a campaign which exposed the extent of UK child prostitution and shocked Parliament into raising the age of consent from 13 to 16. Helen's biography aims to make Josephine Butler much better known. She is available to give talks about her campaigns and her eventful life story, and to answer questions. Helen is a professional historian with a PhD from the University of Sheffield. She has taught many courses on Victorian and women's history and was for many years an associate lecturer for the Open University. Her other books include a history of the women's health services in Sheffield (Born in Sheffield) and the centenary history of the University of Sheffield (Steel City Scholars).
