Holly Howe is a former grade school teacher turned fermentation educator and the founder of MakeSauerkraut, a trusted online resource for fermentation enthusiasts worldwide. Holly’s fascination with the connection between food and health has been with her since her mid-twenties. Ten years into her quest, the book Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon introduced her to the dietary wisdom of traditional cultures, where fermented foods like sauerkraut were staples for both flavor and wellness. After discovering store-bought sauerkraut didn’t last long in her household, Holly decided to try making her own—and a passion for fermentation was born. With nearly 20 years of hands-on experience and hundreds of jars of sauerkraut under her belt, Holly now shares her knowledge and creativity with others. Through her MakeSauerkraut website, engaging workshops, popular online courses, and her book, Holly empowers people to confidently ferment their own flavorful sauerkraut and kimchi. Holly is known for her approachable teaching style and knack for creating unique sauerkraut flavors that effortlessly elevate any meal. She’s also contributed recipes to WECK Small-Batch Preserving by Stephanie Thurow and Cowichan Grown: Seasonal Recipes & Local Wisdom. Holly lives with her family on Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia. When not teaching or experimenting with new sauerkraut recipes, she enjoys reading by the seaside, knitting, hiking in the mountains, and cycling through the valleys in search of local eats.
