Hello! I am an Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker from New York City. I have been kind of obsessed with group portraits of men with only one single woman among them. Like "the only woman in the room" but now the only woman in the frame. There are so many of them!! And they are all different -- but yet the same. Once you start looking you can probably find your own -- maybe from your family history, or local history, or your fields of interest today. ) It seems like we can find an example from almost every aspect of public life, every male group, from communists to capitalists, dentists to workers, scientists to poets, all over the world, we often see how women entered one at a time. The pictures don't all represent the same thing, but they are all interesting to me. I view them as forensic evidence of patriarchy--its slow erosion and its persistence.Their repetition and variety are endlessly fascinating—funny, tragic, infuriating, mysterious, and inspiring—and I am eager to share them with the world and hear what other people think!
