J. Carl Laney grew up in Oregon where he graduated from the University of Oregon and went on to complete graduate degrees at Western Seminary (Portland, OR). He completed his doctoral work at Dallas Theological Seminary. Laney served as Professor of Biblical Literature at Western Seminary from 1977 to 2018. In addition to his teaching, Carl has served as interim-pastor in a dozen different churches, including a congregation on the island of Guam. Carl enjoys preaching and teaching God’s Word in churches as well as the seminary classroom. Laney is the author of numerous books, including The Divorce Myth, A Guide to Church Discipline, Concise Bible Atlas, Tyndale Concise Bible Commentary, Moody Gospel Commentary on John, God, Answers to Tough Questions, Messiah’s Coming Temple, Essential Bible Background, Biblical Wisdom, Discipleship: Training from the Master Disciple Maker and The Story of Israel: A Short History of the Land and Its People. His articles have been published in theological journals and magazines. Biblical geography, history, culture and archaeology are Laney’s special areas of interest. He has traveled extensively in the Middle East and Mediterranean world and has participated in excavations in Israel. Since 1992 he has been taking students to Israel to study the Bible in the Land where it was written. Laney’s hobbies include backpacking, fishing, and working on his two WWII military jeeps.
