JP Bean's first book The Sheffield Gang Wars was published in 1981 and has been reprinted eighteen times. A tabloid newspaper said Over The Wall (1994,his book on prison escapes, should be compulsory reading for every new home secretary and prison governor; instead it was banned from every prison library in the UK. He went on the road with Joe Cocker to write the rock singer's authorised biography (1990 & 2003) and also penned Bold As A Lion, Champion of England, a biography of the 19th Century pugilist and eccentric, Bendigo(2002). His books have been praised by reviewers for their style and immaculate research.
