James W. Johnson

James W. Johnson is a retired journalism professor at the University of Arizona. He is also a veteran newspaperman, having worked at the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Oregonian, the Providence Journal, the Arizona Republic, the Arizona Daily Star and the Oakland Tribune. He wrote his first book, One Step From the White House: The Rise and Fall of Senator William F. Knowland, co-authored with Gayle Montgomery at the age of 60. His book, De Grazia: The Man and the Myth, about the acclaimed Southwest artist, was released Feb. 27, 2014, by the University of Arizona Press. It was named the Best Biography, Arizona subject, by the New Mexico Book Co-op on Nov. 21. His newest book, The Black Bruins, about five African-Americans, including Jackie Robinson, who played football and track for UCLA in the late '30s. It was released Feb. 2, 2018. He lives in Tucson, Arizona.
