Jerome Rothenberg

Jerome Rothenberg was born in New York City in 1931. He is the author of more than 80 poetry collections, including White Sun, Black Sun (1960), A Seneca Journal (1978), and That Dada Strain (1983). He is also the editor of several anthologies of traditional and avant-garde poetry, including Technicians of the Sacred and, with Pierre Joris and Jeffrey Robinson, Poems for the Millennium, volumes 1–3. A noted playwright, editor, and translator, Rothenberg has written four plays and edited and translated over 20 books. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, two PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Literary Awards, and two PEN Center USA West Translation Awards. In 2001, he was elected into the World Academy of Poetry. Rothenberg founded the Hawk’s Well Press and the magazine Poems from the Floating World. He also founded and co-edited the first magazine of ethnopoetics, Alcheringa, in 1970. His recent poetry collections include Gematria Complete, Concealments & Caprichos, A Cruel Nirvana, A Poem of Miracles, and Retrievals: Uncollected & New Poems 1955-2010.
