Born In the Bronx, New York, Jerry Schatzberg’s prolific oeuvre has spanned both photography and filmmaking. After assisting Bill Helburn, Schatzberg launched his career as a freelance photographer. His fashion photography graced the pages of publications such as Vogue, McCalls, Esquire, Glamour, Town and Country, and Life. Schatzberg regularly photographed the creative luminaries of the 1960’s and New York City’s downtown scene, from Warhol and Edie Sedgwick, to Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones After directing several TV commercials, he made his debut as a film director in 1970 with “Puzzle of a Downfall Child”,starring Faye Dunaway. His second directorial effort, “The Panic in Needle Park” (1971), starred the young Al Pacino, whom Schatzberg had discovered in an off-Broadway play. Pacino co-starred with Gene Hackman in his next film, “Scarecrow” (1973), which received the Palme d’Or that year at Cannes. He has directed 11 films in total.
