Jimmy L. Bryan Jr. is professor of history and director of the Center for History and Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast at Lamar University, Beaumont, TX. He received PhD (2006) from Southern Methodist University. He is author of The American Elsewhere: Adventure and Manliness in the Age of Expansion (2017); editor of and contributor to Inventing Destiny: Cultural Explorations of US Expansion (2019); editor of and contributor to The Martial Imagination: Cultural Aspects of American Warfare (2013); author of More Zeal Than Discretion: The Westward Adventures of Walter P.
