Joan’s forty-year career in biology and environmental protection includes research, academia, consulting, and government service. She spent nearly two decades working in Costa Rican jungles, Asia, the Philippines, and Guam, and twenty-three years as an environmental scientist with the federal Environmental Protection Agency in Seattle. She is also a past editor of several state and federal newsletters, including the Aquatic Invasive Species newsletter for the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission. She has authored a number of publications and lectured extensively on environmental programs, invasive species, gardening to attract wildlife, and native plants. A world traveler and Master Gardener emeritus, she lives outside Seattle with her husband Carlos, a large organic garden, a flock of chickens, and occasionally, a great blue heron.
