I spent most of my life in the film industry, switching to video in the early 90s. In those days I worked with all kinds of expensive cameras and support equipment (cranes, dollies, steadicam, etc.) and crew. But when I went solo as a videographer in 2008 I ditched all the 'fancy' equipment and opted for small, light and smart gear. I used to go into a shoot like a S.W.A.T. team commander. Now I walk in like a ghost with a 6 shooter. In and out fast and I get as much done in a fraction of the time. Of course I had the benefit of a lot of training and experience. Then, with the revolution of high quality equipment and editing programs for a fraction of the cost they used to be, a lot of new people entered the field. I started to notice the tendency to buy lots of fancy gear, but didn't see a corresponding degree of quality from those producing video production with that gear. So I started the Video Whisperer Blog in order to share some of my knowledge and experience and to help define what was important and what was not. The positive feedback on that blog lead me to write 'Run 'n Gun Videography--The Lone Shooter's Survival Guide. It was written for lone shooters and small production companies, a fun, fast read with LOTS of information that you won't find anywhere else.
