Joel Hancock was born and raised on Harkers Island, NC. He has lived and raised his family there as well. He received his BA and MA degrees in history from East Carolina University and has had a lifelong interest in studying, recording, and writing about historical people and events. He has articles and essays published in several magazines and journals. His first book, Strengthened by the Storm, was an account of the early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on his native island. His most recent effort is The Education of an Island Boy, Growing Up on Harkers Island in the 50s & 60s. He is a retired insurance agent from North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance. He has been married to the former Susan Leggett of Greenville, NC, for over half a century. Together, they have raised six children and are the grandparents of another twenty-one (so far).
