John Bender is Jean G. and Morris M. Doyle Professor in Interdisciplinary Studies at Stanford University, in the Departments of English and Comparative Literature. He is author of Spenser and Literary Pictorialism (Princeton, 1972); Imagining the Penitentiary: Fiction and the Architecture of Mind in Eighteenth Century England, which won the 1987 Gottschalk Prize for the best book on an 18th-century topic (Chicago, 1987); and Ends of Enlightenment (Stanford, 2012). The Culture of Diagram, co-authored with Michael Marrinan, appeared from Stanford University Press in 2010. He is co-editor (with David Wellbery) of The Ends of Rhetoric: History, Theory, Practice (Stanford, 1990) and Chronotypes: The Construction of Time (Stanford,1991); as well as (with Simon Stern) co-editor of Tom Jones (Oxford, 1996); and (with Michael Marrinan) Regimes of Description: In the Archive of the Eighteenth Century (Stanford, 2005).
