John was born in Ireland and trained as a cabinetmaker in South Dakota. He has written widely for woodworking and how-to magazine and book publishers, and is perhaps best known as a regular contributor to Woodshop News , a trade magazine, since 1993. He was the director of the Black Hills School of Woodworking from 2007 through 2013, and was awarded a fellowship in fiction writing by the Wyoming Arts Council in 2006 (he has authored one novel and a book of short stories). Many of his woodworking projects have appeared in books that also include the work of other designers, builders and authors. For example, in The Complete Book of Woodworking (Landauer, 2001), he provided the text and images for the section "Introduction To Wood". He also contributed to the Collins Complete Woodworker which was published under the imprint of the Smithsonian Institution, and several of his projects appear in two series of how-to books by the editors of American How-To and Woodworker's Journal/Fox Chapel Publishing. He was the editor of Woodworker's Journal in Minneapolis before moving out west in 2000. Today, he and his wife Meg live in the Black Hills.
