John Hayes retired from paid work in 2011 and, after a career in public service, initially as a town planner, and then in the private sector as a management consultant, started to travel and write. His first trip involved a 6-month 5,000 km hike across Europe from Tarifa in Spain to Budapest and his daily blog - johnhayeswalks.com - attracted an audience from all over the world. Since this first adventure, he has continued to travel in various parts of the world, sometimes alone, often with his wife Christine, and occasionally with a larger group of friends. In 2014 John started to write for Cicerone and has so far published 5 travel guides, three describing journeys in Spain and 2 in the Alps including a guide to the epic journey from Munich to Venice. The first 4 guides were hiking guides, and hiking remains John’s first love, but his last is about cycling and describes a journey along the Ruta Vía de la Plata part of Spain’s famous Camino network. Following the success of this guide he is starting the research for a 6th guide which will describe how to cycle the Camino Portuguese. To keep up to date with John's adventures, or to contact him with questions about any of his guides, go to his blog - johnhayeswalks.com. Incidentally, John has produced trip diaries for each of the published guides, diaries which he published as he did the research, and these provide another angle on what was involved in each walk or cycle ride.
