John Jacob Hains has published thirty books, novels and a collection of short stories. Hains focuses on themes strongly related to love in human nature and the flow of life. He often sets his characters in rural, small town, and Southern locations. He offers a contrast to the typical literary perspective which privileges urban, wealthy, and sophisticated attributes as an unconscious foundation of a good life. He also revisits characters who were secondary in one novel and primary in other. He also has characters from different stories interacting in other stories as they move through life. All of his stories are set in the late 20th and early 21st century.
