Back in November 2012, I quit a safe, 6 figure day job to go out on my own and start my own business. I had no savings to speak of, 1 client and enough money for 30 days. I also had my wife + our 3 boys under the age of 10 at home to support. My first "office" was in the corner of our bedroom, including a wobbly folding card table and empty box of Super Pretzels to perch my computer on. (Important note: The power of Soft Pretzels remains undefeated!) I was out on my own, but I had a plan - leveraging LinkedIn to generate leads for my new business. Within 90 days, I'd generated 135,000 USD in new business. I bought more soft pretzels to celebrate. The lesson? LinkedIn can be a powerful tool for lead generation when used correctly. It's all about niching down, creating a client-facing profile, and reaching out with personalized, value-driven 1-on-1 messages + free content that demonstrates your expertise. Since 2012, I've helped countless Small Business Owners, Franchise Consultants, Business Coaches, Accountants, Bookkeepers, CPAs, Consultants and other professionals make 5-6 figure sales to clients they find on LinkedIn using the exact same approach I started with back in 2012. I've done it all while building my work around my life - instead of the other way around. Our boys are grown now, and I wouldn't trade the years I had being home with them for anything. Most of all, what I've found works best on LinkedIn is being yourself - your unique, authentic and real self. Away from work, my favorite things to do including hiking in Arizona, playing golf, walking Rosie the dog, playing pickleball and reading books. (I grew up as the son of two English teachers, and our basement was literally lined floor-to-ceiling with books!) A couple more notes ... I've written 8 books (including three novels), and I started my career as a newspaper reporter for The Arizona Republic and later The Associated Press. I also worked in talk radio before becoming an award-winning PR Director and Social Media Director for a pair of trade associations. My work has been featured by The New York Times, Inc. Magazine, American City Business Journals, Social Media Examiner, Entrepreneur On Fire, The Huffington Post, Business Insider, LinkedIn's Official Marketing Blog and many other outlets online. I live in Minnesota with Sara and our 3 boys, and of course Rosie the dog!
