Josh Ryan-Collins is an economist, academic and writer. He is currently Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Innovation and Public Purpose, University College London and was previously Senior Economist at the New Economics Foundation (NEF), one of the UK’s leading think tanks. He is lead author of two co-authored books that discuss fundamental but neglected aspects of modern economics: money and land. 'Where Does Money Come From?' (2011, NEF), is a comprehensive guide to the UK monetary system and is widely used to teach university-level money and banking courses. ‘Rethinking the Economics of Housing and Land’ (2017, Zed books) was included in the Financial Times’ top economics reads of 2017, chosen by Martin Wolf. It lays out how the failure to incorporate land in to mainstream economic theory has led to many of the modern policy challenges around housing we face today. Josh has a PhD in economics and finance from the University of Southampton Business school, where is a Visiting Fellow. He lives in Brixton, South London, with his partner and daughter and was one of the founders of the 'Brixton Pound' local currency in 2009 which supports independent small businesses.
