Dr. Julie Carpenter's research explores the intersections of people and technology, focusing on cultural, social, and ethical issues. Her work examines how technological developments shape, reflect, and sometimes even redefine understanding of self and community. Carpenter's research continually explores how identities are culturally constructed, negotiated, and expressed through interactions with technology, and how these interactions influence perceptions of what it means to be human, shaping the technological artifacts people engage with. Carpenter is an External Fellow in the Ethics + Emerging Sciences Group at California Polytechnic State University and has held this role since 2015.
