I am an expert risk management consultant experienced in project and corporate risk management and Director of KB Risk Consulting Limited. I began my working life as a quantity surveyor in construction, and moved into risk management in 1992 as a student of the Institute of Risk Management’s (IRM) International Diploma. Since then, I have led the risk management teams in a large construction consultancy and global engineering company, before setting up my own business and becoming a full-time risk management consultant in 2007. I have supported major clients in the public, private and third sectors across a variety of countries and industries, including automotive, charities, construction, civil engineering, education, energy, financial services, gaming, healthcare, hospitality, housing, local authority, manufacturing, mining, nuclear, oil and gas, pharmachem, rail and utilities. I have been an active member of the IRM since I joined as a student, achieving Fellowship in 1996 and becoming a Certified Fellow in 2016, entitling me to the designation of CFIRM. I was on the Board of the IRM from 1999 to 2003, the last year of which as the Deputy Chair. I am an approved trainer for several of the IRM’s virtual and face-to-face training courses, including the Fundamentals of Risk Management and Risk Management Masterclass. I am also the lead developer of the IRM’s International ERM Certificate update and one of its Blended Learning tutors. In addition, I spent five years as a part lecturer and tutor at Leeds Beckett University Business School supporting the delivery of the Project and Risk Management module and leading the Business Risk Management module from 2017. I have also been the Lead Examiner on the Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland’s Qualifying Programme Risk Management Module since 2019. The academic background to my risk management learning and my experience with many different clients, in a variety of organisations, industries and countries, has provided skills and knowledge that I want to share, along with that of expert colleagues who have supported me in writing this book. I am lucky enough to be able to do that through training, workshops, writing, presentations, mentoring, coaching and other forms of communication with those both new to and experienced in risk management. I know the enormous value and benefits that risk management can generate and am delighted to contribute to the development of those who are trying to make risk management work for, and be relevant and add value to, their organisations.
