"Lew-Ellyn is one of our most successful and talented authors." J. Karker, Founder and President, Maine Authors Publishing Lew-Ellyn Hughes is a storyteller who creates humorous, often poignant or insightful nonfiction stories about Maine and its people. Hughes' Maine ancestry dates to the Revolutionary War era, but because her father's military career took her family from New Hampshire to California to Florida to Goose Bay, Labrador (and several places in between) she spent only summers in Maine, at her great-grandfather’s cabin on Moosehead Lake. When her father retired, the family moved back to Greenville where Hughes graduated from high school, worked as a nurse, and raised three daughters. In 2001 Lew-Ellyn and her youngest daughter Holland moved to the tiny village of Stratton and opened a bed, breakfast and bakery. Lew-Ellyn began writing a weekly newspaper column for the local paper that would go on to win The Maine Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest four times and place second another four times. "Maine Stories" and "Farmhouse on the Edge of Town" are collections of the stories from those years in Maine’s Western Mountains. Lew-Ellyn recently retired and returned to Greenville—the town where her parents and grandparents were born—there she wanders the wilderness, and the water ways and continues to write about the people, places and lifestyle of rural Maine. Hughes’ stories have appeared in several newspapers and magazines across Maine, including Down East Magazine, Maine Woman’s Journal, Discover Maine Magazine, The Maine Sportsman, Maine Women’s Magazine and Maine Seniors Magazine.
